Port Gaverne: is a small cove just next to Port Isaac. In years past it was the main harbour for the output from the Delabole slate quarries. The local pub has photos of quite substantial boats beached on the sands while awaiting loading. Quite frequently women and children would hand load the slates until the holds were full! Those days have now gone - today Port Gaverne has a pub, holiday accommodation, limited car parking and a launch site.

Schedule:

Monday 15th July

Last day for deposits!!!  A deposit of £35 is requested to secure your camping and a towing deposit.

The deposit will be used to book your camping and surplus will be held as a towing deposit which will be offset against your diving costs.  The towing deposit will only be refundable if the weather dictates that we call the trip off before setting off.  The camping part of the deposit is non-refundable and any circumstances.

Accommodation:

Jeff has reserved us 15 places at the local campsite next to the pub.  Places are at least half gone at this time.

Anne Cleeve  01208 880259

To avoid Anne being bombarded with calls up to the 15th July please let Jeff or I know and forward your deposit to us.  Thereafter please book direct.

There are numerous B&B and hotel options in the area if you do not fancy camping.  Please book them directly but forward details so we can get hold of you if needed as mobile signals can be a bit patchy down there.

Possible sites:

Port Gaverne shore dive:  An excellent novice dive site or second dive. This site can be shore dived or boat dived. The site is on the East side of the inlet around the small island at the end of The Main. We usually put the divers in at the entrance to the gully (The Gut) between the headland (The Main) and the Island, the Gut is full of life but can sometimes have a strong surge if any swell is running.  We would expect to see Lobsters, Edible Crabs, Spider Crabs, Velvet Swimming Crabs, TomPot Blennies, Peacock Worms, Ballan Wrasse, Pollack, Leopard Gobies. Often we see Congers, Dog Fish, Bass, Mullet, Sea Bream, Cuttlefish and various hard and soft corals and sponges. Max depth is around 14m and can be dived at any state of tide. It is reasonably sheltered from the South West winds, but West through to North East is exposed.

The Sphene - 50:36:152N 04:53:176W. This wreck is covered with fish and lies upright on white sand in around 28m. She is a superb dive satisfying both wreck ferrets and fish lovers. The rudder and propellor are still extant and the boilers and remains of the triple expansion engine are easily found. The bows contain a great deal of chain on the open deck. It is possible to swim around the wreck without incurring any great deco although it is also all too possible to linger and admire the sight of the stern rails and watch the scooting shoals of fish that shoot by underneath. The Sphene was wrecked in February 1946 and was a 800 ton steamship.
