Shout: Tuesday 12th   March 2013

(OK - I lied – winters back!)

What’s been happening since last week?

Another busy weekend….

Thanks to everyone who helped out on Saturday collecting money for the RNLI – a great success – total takings for the day were £3,295, with our RIBs raising £1,370.76 between them.  Anne Langridge from the RNLI expressed her appreciation and gratitude for our continued support in this event.  Thanks everyone – we can be proud of our contribution.

7 brave souls got up bright and early on Sunday morning and had a successful trip out to the City of Brisbane on Channel Diver (two poorly souls remained in bed with “manflu”!)  Where’s the pictures guys…?

And yet more brave souls spent Sunday at Wraysbury with Dave & Mark, dry suit training and general introduction to diving outside of the pool.

Up coming Events:

Try Dive Event- next Tuesday - 19th March:  Come on don’t be shy, Jerry is still looking for a few more volunteers to help out with his 24 Scouts – specifically with instructors, DL, experienced bodies in the pool please.  Contact Jerry if you can help out – or if you have any “small” kit that you can lend (even though I am told they are full sized scouts this time rather than cubs!)

Speaker Event –– Kevin Gurr  - unfortunately Kevin can’t make the 16th April as previously advertised, but we are hoping for another date in April and will let you know as soon as we have confirmation.

Next hard boat weekend: Skin Deeper, Weymouth. 18-19th May.  Depths in the 30m range – ideal for SD and aboveSo far only 4 people have booked on – the boat takes 12.  I will start to advertise this trip more widely, so if you are interested get your name down.  We had a cracking weekend on Skin Deeper at the beginning of March and can highly recommend it.  There is a presentation under “Documents & Downloads – Dive File” on the website, with pictures of the boat and what to expect on a hard boat weekend if you’re rusty or haven’t experienced the joys of UK hardboating. If you want more information please do get in touch.

Diving and related – What’s planned over the next couple of months:

March:

Sunday 24th March – Diving for trainees – venue tbc - South Coast or Wraysbury.  Contact Mark Purchase.

Easter Bank Holiday – 29th March – 1st April: - Cornwall – Marshall: Anne-Marie and Nick.  If you’re name isn’t yet on the list, drop us an email.  A plan for the weekend will follow shortly.  We are still looking for someone to “man” the food/drink tent – this normally works on a “self-serv/honesty box” basis during the day, but does need someone to “manage” the tent/food/drink/set up and break camp each day etc.  Otherwise options are bring a flask and food – or volunteers to do a pasty run to the shop in St Keverne Square – or you can just go hungry!

April:

We are looking for Marshall’s for weekends in April – specifically 6-7th April and 27/28th April – boats are free – don’t waste it!  Contact Nick/Myself

May Bank Holiday Weekends:

Early May Bank Holiday – South Coast diving – suitable for all levels of diver from trainee to advanced – Marshall Paul Stafford.  Diving will be based from East Beach, and Paul has secured a campsite for us all at Warmers Farm Touring Park (Bunn Leisure) 01243 604 499 http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=1529&map=on#maphere  when booking state you are with Guildford BSAC and they will put us all together.

Late May Bank Holiday – Plymouth – again suitable for all levels of diver from trainee to advanced – further details to follow – Marshall Phill Smith

August Bank Holiday – this has now been confirmed as Hope Cove in Devon – thanks to everyone who contributed ideas - Marshall Simon Gosling.

Training:

Diving Planning and Management this weekend – Saturday at the Waterside Centre and Sunday back at Wraysbury – contact Dave/Mark.

Bar Rota & Social:

Simon Grevatt and Ian Blakeley are on bar duty next Tuesday (12 March) – please try and find a volunteer if you are unable to make it.   Many thanks

Calling all Abba fans (yes including those closet fans!) – Saturday 11th May “The Magic of Abba” at G Live in Guildford.  Help support the MSTG on this fund raising event – and boggy the night away.  Details on flyers at the Waterside Centre.

Other Stuff.....

BSAC 60th Anniversary Year: 2013 marks the 60th Anniversary for the British Sub Aqua Club and we would like to join in and celebrate in style!  Mark Purchase is leading on the event on our behalf and has registered our interest (and entry into the competition) with BSAC HQ.  The first suggestion has been to train and qualify 60 people before September 2013 (OD, SD, DL, SDC, Boat Handling etc).  We would like to build up a portfolio of events to mark this 60th year – so ideas suggestions to Mark.  Further updates to follow.

Kit Hire:  if you would like to hire kit don’t forget to contact Jeanette & Becky Marley at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it There is a list of charges displayed in the shed.  Please do not just take kit – not all kit is “seaworthy” so you need to check with Jeanette or Becky that it is safe to hire.

Second Hand Kit:  let Nick know if you have any old/spare kit that you want to either sell or donate to the club.  We have lots of new members who are looking to beg/borrow/steel kit to get them set up.  Nick is collecting a list and can help match buyers to purchasers.  Also if you are looking for kit contact Nick in case he knows where to find it!

What’s been happening since last week?

A great, if chilly, weekend on Skin Deeper out of Weymouth – I think it’s fair to say that everyone really enjoyed themselves, both on and off the boat.  This is the first time (or certainly for many years) that we have a run a novice hardboat weekend, and judging by the feedback, I would definitely look to run another one if people are interested.  Check out the club Facebook page for pictures and gossip from the weekend.  We got through loads of skills and I think everyone will have at least one signature in their qualification books following the dives.  And of course – congratulations to James Paddison who now joins the lofty ranks of Sports Diver!

Dave Culver spent the weekend in Vobster doing his side mount course – a different way of diving – and I’m sure the water was just as cold in Vobster as it was in Weymouth!  If you want to know more about side mounts have a chat with him.

Up coming Events:

RNLI Flag Collection Day: Saturday 9th March –.  Nick did a sterling job collecting names last Tuesday – thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out.  A schedule of names has gone out, but we’ll send it out again later today as a reminder.  Please turn up at your allotted time, otherwise other’s will be left holding the buckets…!  If you want to dress up in diving kit, then please do – it all adds to the occasion (I suggest you leave off the cylinders and weight belts!).  We are still a little light on helpers, so if you can spare an hour or so on Saturday please please please do get in touch.  Or if you find you have a spare hour on Saturday and haven’t let us know then just turn up on the High Street – you can’t miss the boats – one will be at the bottom of the High Street opposite the Friary and the other at the top of the High Street outside the Church – do not mistake the boat on the bridge by Debenhams – this will be the University Club who are also taking part.  This is a really important event for us – the RNLI may one day save your life, and helping to collect money ensures they have the right training and equipment to do so when needed.

Try Dive Event- Tuesday 19th March:  Jerry Sutton has 24 Scouts (yes full sized scouts this time) wishing to come for a try dive on Tuesday 19th March.  Volunteers needed to help by the pool and in the water – names to Jerry please (there will be no pool training that night) - as of last night he had 7 volunteers for the pool and 3 poolside - thanks to those who have offered help - but a few more volunteers are required.  Cheers

Speaker Event – Tuesday 16th April – Kevin Gurr  - put the date in your diaries – more details to follow.

Tuesday 12th March – Meet at the club house at 8.30 for an open discussion with Simon Gosling with ideas for Tuesday evenings.
